About Me

I'm an experienced researcher, writer, and editor with a background in environmental issues and natural foods.

After graduating from Towson University with a degree in English, I went on to work at a natural foods co-op for several decades, immersing myself in the subjects of sustainability, environmentalism, local agriculture, organic foods, and much more.

I'm the mother of one fabulous human, the wife of a pretty okay one, and the perpetual caretaker to an ungrateful, albeit pretty cute, mutt. I spend my time working and walking in the woods of Maryland.

Cunningham Falls State Park Aviary

Nestled beside the Visitor Center in the Manor Area of Cunningham Falls State Park, there is a treasured resource for some of the park’s most extraordinary residents. The Aviary is home to twelve birds of prey, three snakes, four aquatic turtles, and four terrestrial turtles, each of whom cannot be returned to the wild because of either injury or human handling.

STILL LIFE WITH FOOD: Is organic food better for you?

The organic apple my 3-year-old is eating is not just an apple. It is a symbol, a demonstration of a belief that organically grown food is worth the effort. It is generally harder to find and more expensive than its conventionally grown equivalents. But for many reasons, that apple in the chubby hand of my toddler is an invocation of health — for my son, for the farmer who grew the apples, and for the environment.
